The 5.5 Flat Leash
There are enough 6' long leashes available already. We also shortened the handle loop to 6", which is 3" shorter than the industry standard of 9", offering better control.
We wanted to create something different that would help you avoid fumbling with the leash on cold winter days or when your hands were wet. The large thumb stud also makes it easy to attach to your dog’s collar.
The Biothane has a guaranteed strength of 1000 pounds per inch. This is 1/2" Biothane, which means it can handle 500 pounds on the leash alone. The clip rating is slightly lower than that.
The Micro Leash
From Wilde American founder Carter Wilde: I’ve never broken one of our micro leashes. I’ve also used them to attach straps in my truck bed. The BioThane has a guaranteed strength of 1000 pounds per inch. This is ⅜" BioThane, which means it can handle 375 pounds on the strap alone. The micro clip rating is slightly lower than that.
No. If the bottom of your dog’s neck is less than 12" from the ground, it will drag and potentially get caught on their foot.
The 17.5 Long Line
Other companies already make 15' and 20' long lines, so we wanted to bring something special to the table; something you can’t get anywhere else.
Flexi / retractable leashes are dangerous. They are unreliable and bulky. They fail or jam at all the wrong times. That will not happen with our 17.5 Long Line.
Wilde American picks the best-looking colors within our material set. We take the guesswork out of it for you. Plus, this way you can buy an entire matching set with all the same stitching!
The Switchback Safety Line
The short answer: YES! You can use our 12" switchback safety line to attach any two pieces of gear. If your dog wears a harness and sometimes tries to escape it, you can connect a backup collar and the harness so that you will still be connected to the dog if it gets out of the harness.
The BioThane strap has a guaranteed strength of at least 1000 pounds per inch. This is ⅜" BioThane so it can handle 375 pounds on the strap alone. The micro clip rating is only slightly lower than that.
The Tiger Pig Slip Collar
Wilde American founder Carter Wilde’s dog Kelsey is nicknamed “The Tiger Pig.” She’s a 75-pound striped rescue dog from Baltimore City. Carter found out later through a DNA test that she is a mix of 4 breeds: Rottweiler, Pitbull, Catahoula Leopard Dog, and Boxer. She’s the John Wayne of rescue dogs: tough as nails and doesn’t take shit from anyone. She’s friendly as can be, but Carter has never seen her back down from any challenge either. The Tiger Pig Slip Collar is a simple collar that Carter uses with her, and it works well for any dog.
A choke chain typically has a large enough diameter that it can go over the dog’s ears and head in order to get onto the neck. That also means that inevitably the collar can keep sliding down the dog’s neck until it gets wider at the base. If you put pressure on the collar down low like that, you can damage the dog’s esophagus or windpipe. That’s why you hear dogs that are pulling on loose collars choking and struggling for breath.
Because our collar is custom fitted to the dog’s neck and has the ability to attach and detach, you can get a much closer diameter in collar/neck measurements, thus eliminating the possibility for choking.
That depends on what you want to do with the collar. If you want to have a loose collar that will be effective in a moment of need, then measure where you would like the collar to sit on your dog’s neck and add 1".
If you’re using the collar for training, measure right behind the ears. “Right behind the ears” can sometimes be a difficult spot to find, but by following these instructions, you’ll get the proper measurement. If you feel around the sides of your dog’s neck, you’ll find a ton of really strong muscles. If you follow them up toward the skull, you’ll feel them get a bit narrower right at the top before the skull starts to widen. That divot is the sweet spot. From the perspective of applying pressure, that’s where you have the most control of the dog. Measure that smallest measurement on your dog’s neck, as high as you can go before it starts to broaden again at the skull, and add 1".
There are two rings on The Tiger Pig Slip Collar: a floating ring that can slide up and down the collar and a dead ring which is fastened to the other end of the collar from the snap.
In order to make the collar operate as a slip, you will fasten the snap to the floating ring.
If for some reason you don’t want to use the slip function of the collar (for example, if you’re on a hike and your dog is dragging a long line behind them), you can attach the snap clip to the dead ring and then attach your long line to the floating ring.
General Questions
Everyone with a dog should have at least one Long Line. Whether you buy this one or something else, it’s a necessity for training. However, we think ours is superior and believe you will too!
We firmly believe the 5.5 Flat Leash will work for any and every dog. We have tried more than our share of leashes and know they are not all created equal. With years of training and experience guiding us, we had the luxury of creating this leash exactly how we wanted. Give it a try!
The Micro Leash is a perfect fit for those with young dogs they don’t completely trust off-leash in the house. You can also use it for fine-tuning obedience behaviors when working on more advanced skills. For example, if you are building an off-leash heel with a competition dog, you might want the ability to give a pinch collar correction but don’t want the weight of a leash on your dog, cueing them to the fact they are attached to you.
